The 100% Extrafine Merino Wool we use to make our knitwear is very easy to care for. Almost all our garments are machine washable at 40 degrees and can be tumble dried on a LOW setting.

Most of our Scarlet Ribbon Merino garments are machine washable at 40 degrees.

However, before you put your Scarlet Ribbon knitwear in the machine remember that Merino wool does not need to be washed quite as often as regular clothing. This is because it breathes better than any other material and is naturally odour resistant In fact, regular airing of your Scarlet Ribbon Merino knitwear will keep it fresh and reduce your laundry. Simply hang it outside for a few hours to freshen it up. When you do wash your garments, always be sure to follow the instructions on the label. Our hats are best handwashed due to the delicate pom pom and our oatmeal colourway should be handwashed at 30 degrees (always check the care label).

The Woolmark care video above demonstrates how to correctly machine wash our Extrafine Merino yarn…

Just make sure that you

  • DO use a wool approved liquid detergent.
  • DON’T wash in water over 40 degrees!
  • Wash on a gentle, wool cycle with a LOW spin
  • DON’T use powder detergents as these often contain harmful chemicals that could damage your Merino.
  • DON’T use fabric conditioner. Fabric conditioner it designed for use on synthetic fabrics, and as such, it interferes with the natural properties of merino wool.
  • DON’T soak Merino for any period of time.
  • DON’T use bleach on your Merino knitwear.

For our handwash items

  • Our hats and Oatmeal styles should be handwashed for best results
  • All Scarlet Ribbon garments can be handwashed
  • Use cool water and wool approved detergent to massage your Scarlet Ribbon Merino garments and rinse out thoroughly.
  • Any excess water can be removed by rolling the garment in a towel before hanging to dry.
  • DON’T wring your Scarlet Ribbon Merino garments.

To dry your Scarlet Ribbon Merino knitwear

  • You CAN use a tumble dryer for most of our knitwear as long as you use a mild or low setting (always check the care label)
  • Hang the knitwear in a dry and aerated room or outside, but remember to keep it away from direct heat and sunlight.
  • DON’T dry your Scarlet Ribbon Merino knitwear over a radiator or next to an open fire.
  • CAUTION: If you accidentally wash or dry your Scarlet Ribbon Merino knitwear at too hot a temperature it could shrink. If this happens, the fibres will have been permanently damaged.

Storing your Scarlet Ribbon Merino knitwear

  • In order to protect your Merino knitwear from moths, we recommend natural cedar and lavender repellents, such as wooden balls that can be placed in your drawer or wardrobe.
  • If storing your Scarlet Ribbon Merino knitwear for a long time, we would recommend using airtight, vacuum compressed storage bags.
  • Always wash your Merino knitwear before storing it.

Ironing and Dry Cleaning

  • You can iron your Scarlet Ribbon Merino knitwear with a steam iron on a wool setting.
  • Your Scarlet Ribbon Merino knitwear may be dry cleaned – but we don’t recommend it.
