The styles here at Scarlet Ribbon have been designed to be effortlessly sophisticated, helping your baby look smart every day. But a smart baby needs more than just a beautiful outfit to be truly happy, which is why we chose to make our clothes from one of the cleverest fabrics of them all; 100% merino wool.
Merino wool is nature’s woolly wonder and a product of over a million years of evolution. The natural properties of this amazing fibre make it the smart choice for newborn clothing, which is why we chose it for our range of naturally gorgeous baby products.
We know that merino is a wonderful wool, and for those eco conscious mums, it’s already a top choice. Naturally sourced, ethically produced and biodegradable, we’re part of the Campaign for Wool and hope you’ll join us in our quest to increase the use of wool around the UK today. But aside from its green credentials, what’s so special about merino?
Merino has an unparalleled ability to regulate moisture and temperature like no other fabric. This breathable material is able to absorb up to 40 per cent of its own weight in moisture, and then release it into the air to keep your baby free from uncomfortable clamminess and sweat. Your baby is warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s hot; now that’s smart!
Unlike traditional wool which can feel scratchy and irritating on sensitive skin, merino has a silk like outer layer that creates a superfine, skin soft texture, guaranteed to avoid that itchiness often experienced with wool. The fibres are keratinous, which is the same material as your baby’s hair, so there is nothing in our baby knitwear that will irritate. The microclimate that is formed around your baby’s body means problems with eczema and other skin conditions are reduced too.Safe and warm
There has been extensive research conducted around how we keep our babies warm, and in particular the safety aspects of temperature. Babies younger than 18 months are unable to effectively regulate their own temperature, and can lose heat around four times faster than an adult. Merino keeps your baby at their optimum temperature, helping them sleep longer, relax better and build up important reserves to become a resilient, healthy child.
The breathability and thermoregulation properties of merino means your baby will feel super comfortable snuggled in their Scarlet Ribbon merino. Numerous studies have been conducted by research institutions into the sleep benefits of merino, and every time it has been found that babies settle quicker, cry less often and sleep more soundly in this fabric than in any other.
Wool, in the traditional sense, has often been the bane of a mother’s life, due to the natural shrinkage and ‘hand wash only’ requirements of many garments. But our merino is something quite different. Merino wool is stain repellent, and physically blocks stains from being absorbed, keeping it looking amazing no matter what your little one gets up to! Not only that, but Scarlet Ribbon merino garments can be machine washed at 40 degrees, saving time and stress for busy mums.
So now you know why we think merino is such a clever, amazing fibre, isn’t it time you switched? Our products have been created to be smarter than smart, with easy dressing and changing built into the design. And, thanks to the incredible durability of our baby knitwear, your purchases will stay bobble free and keep their shape wash after wash.
